Where we started
Delft Drone Initiative began with a simple goal: to bridge the gap between the theory-heavy approach to drones in universities and the practical, hands-on needs of the industry. This was done through the organization and execution of drone building workshops, where we have guided 200+ participants.
Additionally, community events were organized to bring people with drone interests together for knowledge exchange, flying and tinkering. One of the highlights of the drone building efforts were the workshops conducted at Purple Nectar, where participants with zero experience assembled 30 flyable drones.
Mission
Learn, fly, engineer. We take an end-to-end approach to drones and drone education. Rather than leaning on the theory-first mindset of universities or the flight-only focus common in the private sector, we bring both worlds together. We treat drones as a multidisciplinary field — piloting, flight physics, electronics, regulation, and software — and tackle innovative projects through a practice-based approach.
Vision
To be Europe's leading hands-on drone knowledge centre — producing the most capable drone engineers in the field and setting the industry standard for drone engineering training. Many promising concepts in academia and industry stall before they ever become real projects, held back by a lack of real-world experience and testing capacity. By partnering with universities, companies and institutes, we will help moving drone projects from TRL 4 up to TRL 7.
